First impression

Andrew Blake is a Senior Research Scientist at Microsoft Research Cambridge, Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Edinburgh and a leading researcher in computer vision. Oh, and there’s also an Andrew Blake who produces and directs porno movies — guess which one we’ll be discussing in this review? If you said pornographer, you are correct.

Andrew Blake the pornographer and self-described “erotic artist” is a legend in the porn business whose movies often include fetish, bondage and lesbian imagery. And now he has his own website, an archive of Andrew Blake productions that gives his many fans a convenient way to view his erotic films — his site gives members up-to-date world premieres, all of which were shot on film and are presented in high definition quality in a variety of downloading options. New films are added every month and there are even photo galleries from past and present titles. Can Andrew Blake the scientist compete with any of that?! I think not.

Enter the members area and you’ll discover a header at the top of the page with links to photos, a “Digital cinema,” models, a diary, a calendar, news and “XXXtras.” Below the header you will find all the latest updates to the site, none of which are dated, so it’s impossible to say how often this site is updated (I’m guessing a new movie is added twice a month). Blake’s site is easy to navigate, thanks in no small part to the previously described header as well as the handy search box at the bottom of each page. Looking for a specific model? Check out the model index, where you can find models listed alphabetically by first name. It’s just that easy! One confusing issue was that the 'Digital Cinema' was divided into three sections; 'Feature premier', 'Member premier' and 'Films'. They all contain different content, but there doesn't seem to be any difference in theme or style.

Movies are what Andrew Blake is known for, so let’s check those out first. Choose a movie to view and you are immediately greeted with a sixty second streaming preview, which will help you decide whether or not to download the full clip, each of which is available in a number of different formats, including QuickTime, Windows Media, DivX and iPod—with QuickTime. With Windows Media, you have two choices of quality to contend with (high and low) while the other two options are available in high quality exclusively. Quality is good, but if you’re planning on downloading the high quality versions, be prepared to wait a long time, though the videos are certainly worth the waitm they do disappoint. The issue is that the high quality videos come in 1980x1080 pixels WMV files. BUT the bit rate is only 2.26 mbps which results in lots of compression artifacts and that you don't want to view the video in 100% should you have a screen large enough. Video downloads have no DRM, but they do have small watermarks. There are over one hundred and seventy-five videos on the site at the present time, all about five minutes in length.

And now let’s look at the pictures. New pictures are added to the site far more frequently than new videos are added, almost one new set every other day, in fact. The picture section includes fourteen photo galleries that were seemingly shot exclusively for this site as well as production stills (seems to be screen caps) from Blake’s movies, which make up the bulk of the pictures on this site. Blake’s site offers four different sizes for viewing the pictures (800, 1024, 1280 and 1600 pixels), which can be downloaded one at a time or in a single zipped file. Though there are a few male-female sets, most of the pics are either solo female or female-female. The pictures leave nothing to the imagination and tend to be quite graphic. But in an arty way. You know, cos Blake is an “erotic artist” and all. Cough. Currently, there are over one hundred and fifty galleries housing about thirty pictures each on this site.

But that’s not all, folks! There’s also Andrew Blake’s diary, which lets members “sneak a peek into the thoughts and ideas of Andrew Blake as he creates his acclaimed artistic films. Experience those occasions when he invites you into his world of fantasy.” Surprisingly, the diary isn’t a blog, it’s actually a selection of special little videos documenting some of Blake’s video shoots.

The so-called “XXXtras” the site offers include wallpapers, IM icons, trailers and bonus photos from other sites. No bonus sites, sadly. There is also a store where you can purchase items “hand-picked” by Blake himself. These items include DVDs, pin-up posters, toys, books, lubes, lotions, lingerie, scents and more.

Conclusion

If you’re a fan of Andrew Blake’s movies, then you will be a fan of his website. End of story. Hell, even newbies to Blake’s world will probably get something from his website. Sure, Blake is a pretentious twat, but his self-described “art” is pretty hot, so we’ll let his pretensions slide… this time…

The site however has a lot of room for improvement. Video files are compressed too much, download speed is way too slow and we would love to see more frequent movie updates and more (real) photo galleries instead of screen caps.
