For a long time the standard was a subscription-based system: you pay X dollars per month for access to a collection, regardless of how often you login and view content. The VOD system arose to serve the needs of those users that didn't need unlimited access, and only wanted to pay for what they actually view and download.
VOD stands for Video on Demand, and on the porn sites here it's how you'll view the scenes and DVDs. You most often pre-pay for credit and then use it as you go. This is a great setup, as you are only charged for the time you are actually viewing a scene, not while browsing in search of a good one to watch or those weeks when you are traveling for business and don't even access the site.
Some sites will charge by the second, others will charge by the scene. There is a bit of variety when it comes to content delivery as well. Some sites are streaming only, others will let you download and 'rent' a scene or DVD for a number of days or indefinitely. Review summary: Hot Movies is a massive VOD Porn archive with over 130,000 movies to browse and watch. You'll find thousands of pornstars, lots of variety and new material added daily. The streaming Windows Media and Silverlight videos could be better quality and they are really the only area of the site that needs to be improved. Regardless, the selection is going to make up for it and this site will be worth joining if your viewing habits match those described below.

Review summary: Wanted List is a VOD site that also offers the option of renting actual DVDs sent to your home. You can however choose to view some of their collection online as streaming Flash movies. In total over 4000 titles are available to stream unlimited with a monthly membership. Overall a good site for streaming videos.

Formats are either Windows Media or Flash video, and MP4 downloads are available at an extra fee, as well as rentals. The site's variety and size are its strong points. The pricing and viewing options are rather average and don't stand out much from what other VOD sites offer.

Review summary: XonDemand is a decent VOD site. 42,000 titles are claimed to be available, but streaming formats seem a bit inconsistent and the simple interface might be too simple for some, since you don't get an overview of the scenes in each movie. Overall a VOD site with a large selection, but also some flaws.
